When you’re part of a global community, the chances to meet up in person can be few and far between.
That’s why we were delighted when Katrina, Donor Engagement Lead at the wonderful Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation, let us know she was coming to visit the UK this summer!
Over a pub lunch in London, we invited Katrina and some other members of The Chase Index to join us and share their favourite examples of creating supporter stewardship magic. You know the type – when done right, these ideas can bring joy, surprise, and delight to the people on the receiving end, creating a moment that will stand out as a highlight in their memories.
From small but significant gestures, to award ceremonies that go above and beyond, weaving moments like these into your supporter experience can build stronger, more long-term relationship with your audience. And as our research has shown, more loyal supporters leads to more long-term income.
Looking for inspiration? Here’s some of the ideas and actions our members will be taking away:
“Personal connection to donors is crucial to supporting long-lasting relationships. That may be from a phone call at a thank-a-thon, but don’t underestimate the power of a hand-written note.” – Katrina, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation
“I took quite a few things away… one I’m hoping to action soon is the “Supporter of the Month” award. – Mairead, Breast Cancer Now
“I valued the chat about Thankathons and the benefits right across the organisations, [there’s] lots of great activity going on.” – Emma, British Red Cross
“If it’s not possible to handwrite TO them, encourage something handwritten FROM them. Then, encompass it into something that you can report back on – for example, you can host an exhibition, or create something downloadable or printable.” – Lily, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
“Emma from the British Red Cross mentioned they do a “Supporter of the Month”, where they honour a supporter and invite them to their offices to receive an award in their monthly team meetings. It’s great for the supporter and also great to remind teams of the impact and importance of their work.” – Kelsey, Royal British Legion
“For me, appreciating the lead-in time for something like an organisation-wide Thankathon gave me a lot of food for thought! And the training that staff will need to be able to do that confidently.” – Cass, Friends of the Earth
Wherever your supporters are, and however they are supporting you, adding some supporter stewardship magic their experience with your charity can help to improve their sense of satisfaction.
And growing supporter satisfaction, in turn helps to grow their feelings of loyalty and affinity, securing more long-term support from people who love you more, and love you for longer.
